Yes, I've Been Avoiding You

I had another miscarriage. At least I'm pretty darn sure I did. Last month I had implantation bleeding 10 DPO. I know that is what it was because the only other time I have experienced that was when I was pregnant. There were other things too like my boobs were sore until the day my period arrived rather than until a week before my period. For me that is very strange and again has only happened one other time - when I was  pregnant.  I went to see my doctor. She said that it was ovulation bleeding.  REALLY!? Ovulation bleeding 10 days after ovulation? Thanks Doc but that doesn't add up for me.
I really feel alone this time. Am I making it up in my head? Do I tell people? Will they believe me? All of these questions and emotions have been swirling around in my mind. I want to talk about it, no, actually I don't - I'm fine. Ok, ok, maybe I'm not fine but I don't want to talk about it. I don't want to deal with it. I don't want to know for sure if it's true that I had a SECOND miscarriage. If it is true, not only does it totally suck but then I have to face the reality that I lost another baby and the questions of "can I have a healthy pregnancy?".
So to answer your question, yes I've been a avoiding you. I've been sad and need to have "sad space" for a while. You are so happy and I want you to be happy. I'll be back soon, I just need to be sad for a little while. I love you and I'm sorry

Everyone is Pregnant, Except for Me

I attend a play group once a week and most of the women there are pregnant. I am truly happy for each of them, watching their bellies grow and hearing about the excitement and trials of pregnancy. Right now there are more woman who are pregnant than woman who are not. As you can imagine it is quite difficult for me to go, especially seeing as I have been trying to get pregnant long before any of them. To be honest I haven't went to group for two weeks. The last time I attended I came home crying and miserable. That's when I knew I needed a break. A break so that I could learn to be satisfied with where I am at and thankful for what I have.
One of my friends from group asked me what she could to do make it easier for me. It was so sweet of her and I am so thankful that my friends are understanding of my struggle. I really didn't know what to say to her. For me, I think the biggest thing is that I need to learn how to be satisfied with what I currently have and find a place of contentment; even though I desperately want to be pregnant again. I need to realize that all the hope, worry, symptom spotting and careful planning in the world won't make me pregnant, I need to wait for God's timing.
I do need to talk about it sometimes and that is difficult. My husband can only hear me vent so many times and stare at me blankly not knowing what to say, poor guy. I feel like when I vent to anyone else I am just vomiting all over them. You know what I mean? I just feel like it is probably hurtful  to the person I am venting to especially cuz there isn't much she can say. What are my friends supposed to say "Humm maybe you should both go for fertility tests" Right, like that's not awkward! No I feel like I need to work on my side of all this, but my friend brings up a good point I also need support through this and I just don't know how to ask, what it looks like or anything. I think this is why so often we suffer in silence through things like this.
Above all else I do believe that we need to get control of our emotions and recognize that thinking like "everyone is pregnant, except for me" is not helpful, unproductive and just pain untrue. Emotions and feelings are very real, so feel them for a while, cry, then brush yourself off and remind yourself what is actually real.

Realizing

This is going to be a process.
I can't just change in the drop of a hat and suddenly be satisfied with where I am at and not being pregnant.
I have been planning activities to do with my son and preparing crafts etc but I realized something. I really do want another child, I really do wan to go through pregnancy even if it's miserable. I want to be pregnant so badly and I hate that it is so out if my control!
I do all the right things, drink this don't drink that, eat this don't eat that, excersise, have sex these days, rest and here I am with an empty womb. Sigh.
I've gotten into this thinking that it's so easy for everyone else. Which I know isn't true - everyone has their story.

My Obsession

I've been trying to get pregnant again. Two months trying post miscarriage. I want to be pregnant now more than ever. I promise myself that I will not symptom spot and I won't think about it. Yet I still find myself up late at night on my phone researching the earliest pregnancy symptoms one can possible feel, I check my fertility calendar again and again to see when my period is expected and how many more days until I can test. Then I test and it's negative and I hold on to every shred of hope that I can, maybe just maybe, there is a chance that I am still pregnant. Then it happens. I get my period and I know it's over for that month. It usually takes me a few days to get over the disappointment and ramp up for the next month of trying and waiting and obsessing.
The problem is I am tricking my body into thinking that I am pregnant. The last month I had so many symptoms and I was trying to ignore them but I just couldn't. I REALLY thought I was pregnant and I believe my body thought it was pregnant to, my period was even late. I don't think this is healthy so I'm taking a break. No more trying, no more focusing on getting pregnant. I deleted all of my fertility, baby name, pregnancy apps. I will stop tracking my period and ovulation. I just have to stop. I cannot stand this anymore. I have to end this obsession while I still can.
I've decided that I need to focus on my son. Precious time is slipping away. Time that I will not get back, time that I am not spending on him but fantasizing of being pregnant. As if pregnancy is a wonderful thing rather than 9 months of exhaustion, puking and weird things going on with your body.I'm going to focus on losing weight and getting my body in the shape that I want. I have allowed my desire to get pregnant get in the way of my health. I should have lost this weight ages ago but every month I think I'm pregnant and take it easy.
I also asked myself "Do you really want another child or have you just romanticized the idea of pregnancy and another child" To be honest I think I have to a certain extent. I have fallen in love with an idea and am practically going crazy over it. I'm going to get back to my life; the life that is right in front of me instead of the one that doesn't exist. I haven't decided if I will go on birth control or not yet, most of them give me really bad side effects so I probably won't.
Hello life, I'm coming back to you.

Not a Happy Day

I'm at Church right now. On Morhers Day. I swear every woman around me is pregnant. I just want to cry. I should be pregnant right now, but I'm not. Lost my baby. I could be pregnant right now but I have very little hope of that. I've been waiting and waiting and am so frustrated waiting for something to change. When is it my turn!? I'm happy for all these pregnant ladies, I am. But I am also sad for me an others who have waited so long for the second line to appear on that stick, just to have it smuged out a few short weeks later. This is not how it should be. God help us all. Help us trust you.

Anticipation, Waiting and Disappointment

This is my second month trying again since my miscarriage. It was hard at first, I think because it felt like I was letting go and forgetting. It's easier now and I'm back to being so intensely frustrated because I am not pregnant.

I should be pregnant right now. I should have a baby belly. But instead I am trying again. Trying is like torcher. All the anticipation, waiting and disappointment.

Loss; What we Lose and What we Gain

Loss; It's something we face our whole lives. From a broken toy to a dead goldfish to financial loss, marriage loss or loss of a loved one. Words are not enough to describe what we go through and the parts of ourselves that we seem to lose with each loss. We aren't taught how to deal with our emotions. Our parents didn't know how to talk to us about loss and in turn we don't know how to talk to our children about loss much less how to deal with it ourselves.

There are five stages of grief:
1. Denial and Isolation
2. Anger
3. Bargaining
4. Depression
5. Acceptance
(Click here for a full outline of the stages of grief and loss)

We often get lost well before we ever reach acceptance and we never find our way out of grief, more piles on and we feel as though we may suffocate. I want learn what I can about loss so that I can get to acceptance. I want to grieve and not resist it. I had been resisting it so much that I became physically ill. When I realized what was happening I had a cry and good long ugly cry. I cried like I have never cried before. When I was done I no longer felt ill, I felt good and at peace somehow. Like I had accepted what happened to me for the first time.

Grief is an intensely personal thing; everyone grieves in a different way and for different periods of time. With children we can ask questions. "How does that make you feel?" and empathize "I'm sad too" or "I'm angry too" If they are angry or sad or whatever validate their feelings. For yourself; if you don't have someone that will validate your feelings, validate them yourself. It's ok "talk" to yourself about your grief weather it is internal or aloud. I believe that this technique can be very helpful.

We have lost and it has hurt. In the last 6 months I have lost my grandpa, my husband's uncle, a friend, my friend had a miscarriage and so did I. We all have stories; we have lost, we have cried and mourned and been afraid. If this is all we focus on though, we will go crazy. We will only see loss and the truth is that we have lost but we have gained too.

I have gained. I have gained closer friends, a deeper spiritual life, a new closeness with my son, an understanding and compassion for people going through a difficult time, specifically miscarriage.

Does what I have gained replace what I have lost? No loss is loss; I will never gain back what I lost BUT I can gain more that what I lost; More richness, a deeper fuller life, happiness beyond compare. I may not get what I wanted, but I gain new wants that are more refined to what I wanted all along anyway.

Loss makes us look at the world differently. We have a choice; once we have mourned what we lost we can move forward but we can also stay exactly the same. When we experience loss I think one of the biggest things that haunts us is regret. If I had only done this or said that; we cannot live that way. If we compare our life to driving a vehicle and we are constantly looking in the rear view mirror concerned about what is behind us, we will inevitably continue to crash into things and cause more damage. We need to look forward to what lies ahead in our lives. We cannot live looking back at what we regret.

This is not the end; this is a new beginning.

Miscarriage: The Facts

According to the American Pregnancy Association:
  • The chances of having a miscarriage can range from 10-25%, and in most healthy women the average is about a 15-20% chance
  • An increase in maternal age affects the chances of miscarriage
  • Women under the age of 35 yrs old have about a 15% chance of miscarriage
  • Women who are 35-45 yrs old have a 20-35% chance of miscarriage
  • Women over the age of 45 can have up to a 50% chance of miscarriage
  • A woman who has had a previous miscarriage has a 25% chance of having another (only a slightly elevated risk than for someone who has not had a previous miscarriage)
  • Recurrent Miscarriage (RM): Defined as 3 or more consecutive first trimester miscarriages. This can affect 1% of couples trying to conceive.

According to WebMD:
  • (According to the March of Dimes) as many as 50% of all pregnancies end in miscarriage -- most often before a woman misses a menstrual period or even knows she is pregnant. About 15% of recognized pregnancies will end in a miscarriage.
  • More than 80% of miscarriages occur within the first three months of pregnancy. Miscarriages are less likely to occur after 20 weeks gestation; these are termed late miscarriages.

Remembrance Jewelry; Why I Bought a Necklace

I never thought that I would get a necklace to remember my unborn child by, however I did. I ordered a custom, made to order necklace and I love it.

If you haven't do something to remember your baby. I think it will help. Some people name their baby. That idea is growing on me more and more, however, I think I'd need a gender neutral name because I don't know if my baby was a boy or a girl.

Stuck

I keep going through this same cycle. I act like it never happened. I feel nothing. For days. Then I remember. And it's like it just happened, all over again. Someone please tell me this gets easier. That I'll get past this stage of grief.

OB/GYN Appointment Today

I had my follow up appointment with my OB today. Through the miscarriage I found a really great OB/GYN and I really like her, it made the appointment a little easier. It was really hard though to be in a roomful of pregnant women. I just wanted to cry. My friend reminded me that I only know my story; not theirs. Maybe a few short months ago they where going through what I'm going through. I can just hope that soon I join them and grow a big belly.

The Dark Side of Me

When I see people who are happy and have popped kids out with no apparent struggle, one after the other, I get jealous. I wonder "why is it so easy for them?" Then I feel hatred and jealousy toward them; the poison of my unresolved anger regarding my own miscarriage.

It took over a year of trying, before I became pregnant. For a few glorious weeks our dreams had come true. Then miscarriage; shattered dreams and hopes. Why is this so hard for me and so easy for others?

Tonight I did a horrible thing. I was hating on someone. She has healthy children and one on the way. Then I remembered that she must have had her baby, so I began creeping on her Facebook page to look for baby photos. I didn't find baby photos. I found out that her baby was in heaven, with mine.

I was reminded of this powerful truth, "Be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a battle you know nothing about". I can never let this happen again. Even while I struggle through my guilt, and anger I CANNOT allow my anger, my jealousy to overtake me and feel hate toward someone else. It was SO WRONG. So wrong to judge her based only on what I see. Because it is what I don't see that hurts her the most. I am so sorry, so sorry for her loss, for yours and for mine. I'm sorry I allowed the anger to fester. I realize that we are the same; struggling in silence grasping for hope in the darkness.

Hiding

I've been struggling through my grief. Trying to deal with it and being unsuccessful. So I bought a book. Grieving the Child I Never Knew. So far I have read the introduction and the first chapter. It is really good and I highly recommend it to anyone who is having a hard time dealing with their grief or are hiding from it. I think that is what I am doing. I think I'm afraid that if I really fully embrace the grief, I'll never stop crying. It sounds ridiculous, I know, but right now it's as if my grief is a dam and if I stop hiding from my feelings the dam will break apart and flood my life. I don't want to be flooded, I just don't think I could handle that. I'm sorry, once again I don't have anything for you except my ramblings. I hope you are doing well.  I really do. But if you are not please know that is ok.

I really would love to hear you story. Please take a moment and share it with me.

Not as Fine as I Thought

I don't know what to tell you today. I have been doing really well, almost great. I have been happy and continuing on with my life. Then I have these moments, where I wonder if I'm crazy because I seem to be moving on, or not thinking about it or whatever. Then I just keep going like the freaking energizer bunny; planning this, organizing that, cooking, cleaning. I have moments when I want to cry but I just don't have tears. The more I allow myself to grieve the realer it becomes. If I just ignore it will it go away? Will I wake up one day and realize this was all a bad dream?

I love to hear other peoples' stories it really helps me to know I am not alone. That other people look at pregnant woman and feel angry, or are jealous of their sister or best friend. However some people have pretty horrific stories. The more I hear these stories the more I feel like I got off easy. Maybe I don't have the right to grieve and mourn because I got off "easy". Maybe I am supposed to move on and pretend like nothing ever happened.

Ahhh but I can't DO that! Because something DID happen! My baby stopped developing and died in my womb. That loss is, at least for me at this point, is indescribable. It is a sorrow so deep within my soul it cannot find its way out; It's lost. If I don't grieve, I fear what it will do to me in the years to come. I do not want it to fester within me like a poison. I must gather the courage that it will take to face it and overcome it.

Have a listen to this song, I'm finding it really comforting and I hope you do too.

We Suffer in Silence, but no more

I had a missed miscarriage in January 2014. I was shocked, devastated, disappointed and alone. When we get pregnant we are not `supposed` to tell anyone until after the first trimester for fear that we will have a miscarriage and have to tell everyone. My husband and I chose to tell our immediate family and close friends. When I miscarried everyone was `sorry' and supportive. My sister brought meals and helped with my almost three year old son. My friend and mom in law brought flowers. Everyone was lovely. It took me a week just to feel a little bit `normal`. Once I began coming out of my funk and I began talking to my friends, I was amazed at how many of them had miscarried themselves. Why did I not know before? Why did they suffer in silence?

I think I have figured out at least partially why when women miscarry we suffer in silence. Some of the people that I told about the miscarriage where very uncomfortable (people who had not miscarried themselves). I could see it rising on their face, their muscles tensing in fear of saying the wrong thing. Looking at me as if I was about to explode with tears and they where ill equipped to 'deal' with me. Truth is, I know you are sorry, I know you don't know what to say, I know you haven't experienced what I am going through. It's ok. If I need to talk about it, let me talk, if I need to cry let me cry without you calling a shrink. If I want to talk about the weather, or future plans listen to me. I think we don't share what we are going through because of how other people react to us. I think we feel like we are "too much' for them. We aren't suddenly made of glass. We feel like we may shatter but not in the way that you think.

Some people blame themselves for their miscarriage or feel guilt that maybe they did something wrong. I do not feel this guilt and I'm not too sure how many people feel this guilt but I think we are expected to feel it. I think people are surprised when we want to try again right away. You know it's ok to ask questions so you can understand what your friend who miscarried is going through. And if your friends are 'afraid' of you. I urge you to be courageous enough to tell them how you feel, explain to them that you aren't on but that is ok.

I don't want to suffer in silence. Have I made it public on facebook what I have gone through? No, I'm not ready. I haven't even shared my story on this blog yet. BUT I will. We need to support each other, whether it's sharing a song that can help us let go of the tears so we can grieve or simply knowing that our story is being heard and hearing other peoples stores. Lets not suffer in silence. Let support each other and when we are ready lets tell those around us so that they don't have to suffer in silence too.

Send me your story and if you are ok with it I would love to post it to my blog.

Give it up

Part if me is afraid that if I give up this sadness. If I move on and am happy again that I will be somehow losing my baby again. No one will remember my baby, I want her to live on in my heart. But I don't want to let her go...

Fighting through the Loss

I'm having a hard day today. I find myself angry, irritable and sad. I had to go to see my doctor today. Not for anything related to the miscarriage, I only needed prescription refills. I sat in the same room where the miscarriage was confirmed and I heard those words, "Sally, I'm so sorry". I tried to shake the feeling off but found myself fighting to hold back tears. The psychologist I saw said to just let it out, but really right there in the doctors' office? I managed to hold it together for the most part. I'm just waiting for this to get easier.

We Will Meet Them One Day

My friend who has suffered a miscarriage was encouraging me through email. I wanted to pass this along to you because I found much comfort in what she said.

"Well I heard a doctor say that when baby's don't make it into this world it's because they wouldn't of been strong enough to survive so instead they get to spend there whole life with Jesus in heaven and we will meet them one day!! How great is it to think that all those baby's r being cradled in His arms"

To those of you whose anniversary of your loss is near; I hope you are found with much comfort and love.
